Java Moss
$7.99
Java Moss is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly aquatic plants for freshwater aquariums. Native to Southeast Asia, it features small, bright green, thread-like stems covered with tiny leaves, creating a soft, feathery appearance underwater. Java Moss is incredibly versatile — it can grow attached to rocks, driftwood, and decorations, or spread across the substrate to form lush carpets and walls.
Its hardy nature, low-maintenance needs, and ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions make it a perfect choice for aquascaping, breeding tanks, and shrimp setups. It provides excellent cover for fry and small fish while helping improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients.
Care Instructions:
Lighting:
- Low to moderate light. Java Moss is very forgiving and will even grow under basic aquarium lighting. Brighter light encourages faster, denser growth but may require more frequent trimming.
Water Conditions:
- Temperature: 59–86°F (15–30°C)
- pH: 5.0–8.0
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Substrate:
- Not required. Java Moss can be left free-floating or attached to surfaces using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue.
CO₂ and Fertilization:
- Not necessary, but growth will be faster and lusher with added CO₂ and liquid fertilizers.
Growth and Propagation:
- Grows by expanding its existing mass. Simply divide clumps or spread new pieces elsewhere in the tank to propagate.
Maintenance:
- Trim regularly to keep it tidy and prevent it from overtaking the tank.
- Gently rinse or swish in tank water during water changes to remove trapped debris.
- Watch for algae — high lighting without good maintenance can lead to algae growing on the moss.
Quick Tips:
- Perfect for shrimp and fry tanks as it provides excellent hiding spaces.
- Can be used to create living walls, moss trees, carpets, and more with a little creativity.
- Extremely hardy — survives even in less-than-ideal conditions.
