Vallisneria
$7.99
Vallisneria is a classic and hardy aquatic plant, beloved in freshwater aquariums for its lush, grass-like appearance. It features long, ribbon-shaped leaves that sway gracefully in the water current, creating a natural and serene underwater landscape. Depending on the species, leaf lengths can vary from a few inches to several feet, making Vallisneria perfect for background planting or creating dense, natural screens in tanks.
This plant is a true aquatic — it lives completely submerged — and is native to slow-moving rivers and lakes across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Popular species include Vallisneria spiralis (straight leaves) and Vallisneria americana (broader leaves).
Care Instructions:
Lighting:
- Moderate to high lighting is ideal. Vallisneria is adaptable but grows best with bright, consistent light.
Water Conditions:
- Temperature: 68–82°F (20–28°C)
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Substrate:
- Nutrient-rich substrate is recommended, but Vallisneria can adapt to regular aquarium gravel if supplemented with root tabs.
CO₂ and Fertilization:
- Vallisneria doesn’t require CO₂ injection but benefits from occasional liquid fertilizers or root fertilizers for strong growth.
Growth and Propagation:
- This plant grows quickly by sending out runners (little shoots that create new plants). Over time, it can form a lush “forest” if not managed, making it perfect for natural aquascapes.
Maintenance:
- Trim any damaged or excessively long leaves with sharp scissors.
- Thin out runners as needed to prevent overcrowding.
- Avoid using copper-based medications, as Vallisneria can be sensitive to copper.
Quick Tips:
- Watch for melting (leaf decay) if moving plants into new tanks — they often bounce back with new growth.
- Gentle water flow is preferred; very strong currents can damage leaves.
- Makes an excellent oxygenator and provides great cover for fish and fry!
